Chapter Eight

Theo couldn’t ever remember a kiss such as the one Regales laid on him. The man teased along his tongue and plundered his mouth. His fingertips twitched ever so slightly, caressing his flesh.

Goose bumps spread down his neck and over his chest. His nipples beaded, and the hairs at his nape stood on end. A tremble worked through his body, and blood flowed to his dick.

Moaning, Theo lifted his hands and grabbed Regales’s shoulders. He skimmed his palms over the man’s wide collarbones to his upper arms. Gripping the huge man in a tight hold, Theo clung. He couldn’t make up his mind.

Theo found himself chuckling. He couldn’t help it. The man sounded so put out at having to breathe.

“My lips aren’t going anywhere, ya know,” Theo teased huskily. He nuzzled his right temple against Regales’s, returning the affection. “Breathing is kinda necessary.”

“Not going anywhere? You sure about that?” Regales lifted his head up and met his gaze. “That’d be the best news I’ve heard all year.”

Realizing what he’d said, Theo tensed. His eyes widened as he swept his gaze over Regales’s kiss-swollen lips and flushed face. He couldn’t even figure out how he’d missed the fact that he’d been kissing someone with a thick beard.

Suddenly the slight beard-burn on his chin registered.

What else registered was the throbbing in his cock.

“No, Hess didn’t call me,” came Regales’s surprising answer. “His alpha did. Alpha Ashton heard your truck, so he talked to Hess, and then contacted me.”

Turning his head, Theo caught Regales’s gaze. “Why would he do that? Why would he care?”

“Because you’re my mate, Theo,” Regales replied. Evidently, Theo’s disbelief could be read on his face, for the much larger man’s bearded lips curved into a slight smile. “Yes, it really is just that simple. Shifters help each other woo their mates when they’re human.”

“Why?” Theo had to ask again.

“It’s a fact of our lives that paranormals have a harder time winning over a human mate as compared to any other.
